James Potter doesn't want to talk about it. ([info]jamesopotter) wrote,

I'm hungry but nothing sounds good. I'm bored but Uncle Charlus is busy. Why don't elves know how to play Wizarding Chess?

Sirius.

Which of the unforgivables do you think is the most forgivable?

Depends on the circumstance. If the person is in immense pain and will die worse, the killing curse is more acceptable. If it's for short periods, cruciatus or imperius are probably equally better than killing someone, because pain is short lived but being not in control of yourself is the worst fate I can imagine.

Uncle Charlus is pretty insistent on me learning them. Tried the Imperius last night and it didn't go well. Tried the Cruciatus earlier and it was even worse.

He's pretty damned impressed though that I can manage a patronus. He can't.

I guess I didn't realize. There has to be a way to cast both. It means a lot to him that I figure this shit out.

I did get some good practice in at throwing off an Imperius at least. There's got to be some trick to being good at them. Didn't your parents ever teach you ways to make them work?

Well, generally when one uses dark magic, it gets hard to use light magic.

I know how to throw things off theoretically but they would never try it on me!

Sorry, my words got all mushy. Mostly I meant didn't your parents teach you any tricks for mastering them. All Uncle Charlus kept saying about the crucio is that you need to mean it. But... I don't?

I can think of tons of things that hack me off but I'm just not... good at this.

If you're doing it very quickly, you just have to be furious. You're not the furious kind. You don't want to control people and I hope you don't want to kill people. You don't mean it, thus, it doesn't work.

I don't want to disappoint him. I guess I'll just keep at it. If I can learn to turn into Prongs I can learn to crucio a spider.

I wouldn't say they're stupid exactly. You can't be stupid and bake like they do. Or maybe they've just got their brains so full of recipes they don't have room for anything smart?

They don't know logic or games, they know cooking and cleaning. I wouldn't call skill in household duties intelligence so much as practicality.

Not to be dense, but aren't household duties what women are supposed to do as well? And I wouldn't call most of the ones I know stupid.

No, household duties are what house elves are supposed to do. Women oversee these duties, and are capable of doing much more even if they don't believe it themselves. All house elves know is cooking and cleaning, therefore they cannot be judged on the same intellectual level as a witch or wizard.

And you are not learning from the best of sources, if you are being taught by Gaius Travers. Of course he would tell you that women do nothing but household work, his family does not have house elves to do work for them.

Gaius has been a great teacher, and he hasn't said anything that my Uncle Charlus hasn't said as well! Society works because there are rules and order and a hierarchy.

Managing a household often involves more than many men who are raised in society are aware of, particularly if there are children involved as well. There are also many groups working to improve the lives of others and collaberating with the government in many cases to achieve these goals. Men and women work in different ways, perhaps, but no less than each other.
